I was interested to read this article today in Slate on-line magazine about how researchers have discovered that if you have a commute greater than 45 minutes, you are more likely to get a divorce. Now, when you think about it, this probably didn’t need a bunch of researchers to uncover — commuting is a soul sucking way to spend time, especially in Los Angeles County. If you are spending too much time on the freeway while it is resembling a parking lot, here are a couple of ideas for you:
- See if you can telecommute for at least part of the week
- See if your boss will allow you to adjust your hours so that you can come in before or after rush hour and leave accordingly
- Not as easy in this economy, but still possible here in the South Bay — change jobs to one closer to home.
- Sell your house or rent it out and move to one closer to work. I’m happy to run the numbers for you and see if this makes any financial sense whatsoever. It doesn’t work for everyone, but sometimes it is possible to get enough for your old house and live in an area closer to work, especially if you don’t have school age kids where the school district matters.
If all else fails, try some books on tape; they really help the miles go by more pleasurably and at least that should eliminate some stress, right?
Hoping to do my “bit” to help you all stay happily married out there!
